           Petrified Wood is real wood that has turned into rock composed of quartz crystals, which is very brittle and shatters easily. This fossilized wood is a colorful agate, and even though petrified wood is fragile, it is also harder than steel, and 4 times as hard as granite.

           Petrified wood is very colourful, due to the effect of impurities such as iron, manganese, copper and lithium present in the wood during the fossilising process. The usual colour of petrified wood is red, with yellow, black and white bands, although other shades such as blue are often found.            One of the greatest concentrations of petrified wood in the world is found in the Petrified Forest National Park, in Arizona. This famous fossil wood was formed during the Triassic age (about 200 million years). The area of northeast Arizona now contained within the Petrified Forest National Park was once part of a large forest of trees, similar to modern-day conifers. The preservation process began when some of the trees were buried by water and sediment. Over a long period, water containing dissolved minerals seeped into the wood and replaced the organic cells with stone. Logs as long as 200 feet and 10 feet in diameter have been found in the Petrified Forest.
